Transportation

The mission of the Transportation Department is to support the number one goal of BIS which is to improve student achievement. Our part of this process is to develop a program that will allow safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and activities.

Student Guide to Safety

Our goal is to provide safe transportation to all eligible BIS students and we believe that safety requires teamwork! Here are some ways that students can ensure the safest possible bus experience:

  • Be aware of moving traffic and walk as far off the road as possible facing traffic.
  • Leave plenty of time to get to the bus stop – don’t rush!
  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Be alert to driveways, alleys, parked cars, and turning cars.
  • Stay a safe distance from the street and don’t play around at the bus stop.
  • Be aware of the Danger Zone. Stay 10 giant steps away from the outside of the bus as it is pulling up.
  • Wait for the bus to completely stop before you move towards it.
  • Wait for the driver’s signal before crossing the street.
  • Hold the hand rail when climbing the bus steps.
  • Sit down as soon as possible and then sit facing the front of the bus, with your things in your lap.
  • Keep your head, arms, and all belongings inside the window at all times.
  • Speak quietly to your friends while you’re on board the bus.
  • Stay seated at all times.

Student Guide to Safety

Parents also play a vital role in school bus safety. Here are some ways that you can help keep our children safe:

  • When driving your car, slow down and be alert when you pass a bus stop, and keep an eye out for students who are walking to their stop.
  • Remind your child to respect the private property of homeowners and business-owners that may surround their bus stop.
  • Remind your child to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching the bus.
  • Remember that we will not allow a pre-kindergarten or kindergarten student to get off the bus without an approved adult to meet them at the bus stop.
  • Talk with your child about the Danger Zone
